3 January 2019
GOSPEL musician Reverend Chivaviro’s song Matishamisa Jireh was voted song of the year on the Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe annual Top 50.
Chivaviro did not just prove a point but also broke the competition’s record by garnering 432 321 votes.
Matishamisa had 292 065 more votes than Blessing Shumba’s winning song for 2017, Changa Chajaira which had 140 256.
Since his album release in January 2018, his song Matishamisa Jireh was holding pole position on the weekly Radio Zimbabwe Coca-Cola top 20.
Another of his songs, Hande Tinovaka came fourth after realising 386 433 votes losing by a small margin to Mai Patai’s third placed track Anokomborera.
Upcoming gospel sensation Admire Nago’s Wandigadza came second with 388 579 votes and the musician is arguably the genre’s biggest finding in 2018.
For their efforts, Chivaviro pockets $2500 while Nago takes home $2000 with Gweru based Mai Patai getting $1500.
This year’s edition of the Coca-Cola Top 50 once again put gospel music on the spotlight as seen in the top five and completed by Mharidzo Hetisani’s Born Again on fifth.
Chivaviro’s Matishamisa was also number one on Star FM Gospel Greats.
His success becomes the first on home soil after his Ebenezer song failed to make it in 2016.
However, the song went on to get more than a million views on YouTube, was voted Best African Collaboration and got Chivaviro an INGOMA recognition.
Chivaviro spoke to H-Metro about his success.
“I attribute both my successes on Radio Zimbabwe and Star FM to the fans, they are the ones who played the greater part in all these chat shows.
“After we lost on Ebenezer three years ago we went back and re-strategised thus including interacting with the audience who are the ones who push our music.
“This time it payed off and I am happy that through our relationship, the fans felt obliged to vote us in to have a winning song,” said Chivaviro.
Seven spots in the Top 10 went to gospel music with Chivaviro (Matishamisa 1st and Hande Tinovaka 4th), Admire Nago (Wandigadza 2nd and Hossana 7th) and Mai Patai (Anokomborera 3rd and Ndinodavira 9th) having two songs each.
Mharidzo Hetisani completes the list with Born Again on fifth position.
Killer T and Jah Prayzah’s Hondo only managed sixth position whilst sungura ace, Alick Macheso’s Ndakakutadzireyi was on number eight.
Legendary musician, Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi completed the best 10 songs with his song Wanza Sorry.
Contrary to popular belief, one of the ultimate songs that pundits have been dancing to at social events, Kanjiva, sat on the 46th position with 2073 votes.
Man behind the hit Enzo Ishall also had his Smart inotangira Kutsoka song on number 43 with 2165 votes.
By another margin, Baba Harare’s The Reason Why managed 2155 votes to only claim the 44th position.
Dancehall star Winky’s Dzika Ngirozi was also a disappointment to his legion when it came out on number 29.
Military Touch Movement’s Ex-Q’s Tsvigiri and Nzenza only managed positions 19 and 38 respectively.
According to Coca-Cola senior brand manager, Vee Chibanda, the annual Radio Zimbabwe Coca-Cola Top 50 is arrived at after factoring in all the weekly SMS votes from January to December.
Meanwhile, voting for the 2019’s winner starts today.
