A hapless Harare police officer was exposed of extortion after he was trapped into accepting a bribe in the presence of High court assistant inspector.
Allen Nyamuzuve was arrested after he was trapped into receiving a bribe from High Court Judge Justice Foroma, in the presence of Assistant Inspector Ruzivo, who is attached at the High Court.
It is alleged that Nyamuzuve was demanding a bribe from a suspect arrested, who had been accused of stealing from his employer, Justice Foroma.
Appearing before Harare Magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa the accused was not asked to plead.
It is the state’s case that on March 9, Simon Ngundu was arrested for stealing 10 kgs of rice from his employer Justice Foroma and was detained at Milton Park police station, where Nyamuzuve was stationed.
According to the NewsDay, although Justice Foroma later withdrew the charges against Ngundu, It is alleged that Nyamuzuve who was the investigation officer, ordered Ngundu to pay $50 as a token of gratitude lying that he was the one responsible for the release.
Ngundu is reported to have promised to give Nyamuzuve the money once he was released but instead told Justice Foroma about the issue.
Justice Foroma then moved swiftly and invited assistant inspector Ruzivo, who is attached to the high court and then gave Nyamuzuve $20 in his presence, which led to the arrest of the corrupt Nyamuzuve.
The presiding magistrate remanded the case to March 28 and granted Nyamuzuve $50 bail.
